Artistic Concepts by Carolyn

Daily blog of art in progress by Carolyn Needleman with personal comments by the artist. I primarily work in oil, because I enjoy the rich texture and buttery feel of the oil as I paint. You can manipulate oil to create color excitement, drama, mood and texture in a painting. There is a pleasure in creating a work of art from first draft to finished project that excites me and fills my fundamental need to create.

Dance Recital Saturday

We have a new budding artist in the family. My granddaughter Sarah who is five years old will be preforming this evening on stage at Hatboro-Horsham high school. Her group will be doing a tap dance routine to a James Brown number.

I took her to her dress rehearsal last night. Her group brought down the house! It was wonderful!

So, tonight is the big night.

So long, see you soon.

End of the Month News

Work is going very well on both of my still life pieces.

The oil painting is moving along nicely. I needed to wait for the back ground block in of veggies to dry. It took the longest time, as the weather was very damp and we had several rain days.
What has been done so far is satisfying and I am pleased.

The additional pastels that I needed have been delivered, so I can get back to work on that also.

I will be seeing my grandchildren, son and daughter-in-law this week end. My Sarah is in her second dance recital this week end, doing tap dancing. It should be a blast!

Got to go...enjoy the view.

Yesterday Was A Lost Day for Art

Well, folks, today is Tuesday and I am back home, ready to work.

Yesterday was a very lost day for creating anything. It took me a long time to get home from Ambler, Pa. because of the heavy rains. (I had stayed over night at my son's house on Sunday.)
I got home late and didn't have the creative urge.

I will probably work on the oil painting this morning and the pastel piece this afternoon.

Please wish me a good creative experience!

See you later.

Happy Mothers Day

Happy Mother's Day to one and all of you wonderful ladies!

I am planning to spend the day with my son, daughter-in-law and both grandchildren at my son's in-laws house. Each year all the men on my daughter-in-law's side cook for all of the mothers. It is a grand celebration and the food is just delicious. It's also a treat to gather together with family.

My daughter has phoned me from San Francisco wishing me a great day. I received a lovely card and gift from her.

All work of art will be postponed today and will resume tomorrow. My order from the art supply house came yesterday, so the pastel piece will get pride of first place tomorrow.

Gotta run...enjoy your day.

It's Gonna Happen

The new oil painting has been started at last!

It depicts summer and autumn vegetables, just like my new pastel work. This piece is on a 16" x 20" cotton duck canvas, gallery profile.

I blocked in the outline shapes of the vegetables yesterday. Today I started blocking in general color to the veggies, nothing specific as yet, just tone and shape. I will deal with the negative space later in the day, using burnt umber. I will warm the burnt umber with tones of red and cool some areas in deep shade with ultramarine blue.

All of the above is necessary to adjust tones and deal with negative space.

If you are wondering why I am not working of the pastel piece, I needed to order several new colors of pastel sticks and I am waiting for them to arrive before I continue. They should arrive by early next week.

Well, enough for now, I need to get back to work.

See you soon. Enjoy the day. Hope it's a great one for you.

Back in the Studio 2

Well, folks, I realized that I had a spelling mistake on the last post!

The pastel paper is Canson, Mi Tientes. Must have had a senior moment.

Back to work in the studio.

Back in the Studio!

May 7, 2008

I've returned home and have gotten settled in from my long trip to San Francisco. Everything has gone well and I am back in the studio.

Preliminary work for a new pastel still life has been blocked out and drawn on Caisson pale blue paper. It is a large piece, 18" x 24" depicting various summer and autumn vegetables. A pumpkin, green and red peppers, a luxurious green leafy cabbage, a gourd and a parsnip. The green leafy cabbage takes center stage.

I like the layout of this piece so very much that I think that I will repeat it on canvas and oil paint. I will work on both pieces, one one day and the other the next day.

There are many additional ideas that are swimming around in my head for other projects this summer. I had better start taking notes so I don't loose ideas.

Well, back to the studio.

May your day be productive and filled with joy.
