Artistic Concepts by Carolyn

Daily blog of art in progress by Carolyn Needleman with personal comments by the artist. I primarily work in oil, because I enjoy the rich texture and buttery feel of the oil as I paint. You can manipulate oil to create color excitement, drama, mood and texture in a painting. There is a pleasure in creating a work of art from first draft to finished project that excites me and fills my fundamental need to create.

A New Creation

3-24-06

Today it's time to think of a new still life composition.

There is a wonderful little African violet in bloom on my windowsill. It looks so feminine and delicate, but it is a little powerhouse of blooms.

I think that I want to capture the delicate feminine side of the flowers with the drama of black velvet.

I need a third object to pull your eye in to examine the entire painting. I found a baby spoon that is the perfect size to do the job. That was added to the composition.

Now, what does it all look like? Is it pleasing to the eye? Does it say what I want it to say?
Yes, it does.

Now on to preliminary drawings of the subject to see on paper if it is interesting. After various drawings, I see what is the most interesting of all.

Next on to drawing it on my canvas. Is this what I want to say in this painting? Yes.

Well, it's finished! The title of this painting is "Flame." It certainly didn't start out this way, but I am pleased with the changes. It now is a more powerful work.

I am going to let it dry, varnish it, and put it up for sale.

Work in Progress

I have been thinking and dreaming of Spring and warmer weather. It's been cold for too long. Let's start thinking positive thoughts.

Time to begin a new art painting. Since I have Spring on my mind, what better to paint than a lovely white lily.

Well, here is my first draft. I think it may be a start. Looking at it, white doesn't do it for me.
What do I really want to see?

Let's try this! Red......I want warmth and passion. Yes!!
