Artistic Concepts by Carolyn

Daily blog of art in progress by Carolyn Needleman with personal comments by the artist. I primarily work in oil, because I enjoy the rich texture and buttery feel of the oil as I paint. You can manipulate oil to create color excitement, drama, mood and texture in a painting. There is a pleasure in creating a work of art from first draft to finished project that excites me and fills my fundamental need to create.

Well, Friday has rolled around again! Where did the week go?

This week was spent working on my latest still life painting of cabbage, peppers, onions and jars of olives and roasted peppers. It is going very well and more than half way completed.

I didn't see my mentor Lori this week but plan on seeing her on this coming Tuesday. A major headache got in my way for my Thursday session this week.

Major time was spent on the Wet Canvas web site this week learning how to navigate their tremendous information site. I have a lot to learn and a lot of research to do. Many helpful people that are artists too.

Enjoy the beauty around you. It can be found in unexpected places.

This week went by fast! So much has been done with so much to do.

A new still life oil painting was started early in the week. It's a kitchen piece with vegetables that are fresh and some already in jars. There is lots of shades of green and reds (my favorite colors) with a copper bowl for contrast. I'm liking it and I hope that you will also.

Thursday was my regular meeting with my mentor Lori Levin. We decided to sharpen my pastel skills for several sessions. Lori set up a still life of autumn objects, pumpkin, gords in several colors with autumn leaves on a light pastel green napkin.

I did several preliminary drawings to get the composition "right." Then my final drawing was done on pastel paper. The lightest shades and tones of color went in first. I am still establishing those shades and tones. Darks will go in last. It's fun....A very "hands on type of art."

Next week will be very busy with many things to see to. My art projects first of all.

Take care. Remember to enjoy the day and see the beauty of just being here of Earth.

Bye,

Carolyn

Happy Labor Day

September 4, 2006

Happy holiday to one and all. Enjoy the day with family and friends.

I plan to catch up on all of the home chores today.

Later in the day, a new still life set up will be addressed. I plan to start drawings on it tomorrow, then start painting. Details to follow.

Enjoy the day. See you all tomorrow.

Friday

Three paintings are up for sale on Artbyus.com and one on EBay.

I need to start on a new project. Several come to mind. There are some wonderful pictures from my trip to Mendocino, California of the sea and surrounding areas. I would like to do some oil painting using those photos.

My mentor, Lori Levin and I have discussed working in pastel for several learning sessions. Work will be started this week on a still life that she is assembling for me. Will keep you posted.

Bye for now. Remember to enjoy the day and the view.
