Artistic Concepts by Carolyn

Daily blog of art in progress by Carolyn Needleman with personal comments by the artist. I primarily work in oil, because I enjoy the rich texture and buttery feel of the oil as I paint. You can manipulate oil to create color excitement, drama, mood and texture in a painting. There is a pleasure in creating a work of art from first draft to finished project that excites me and fills my fundamental need to create.

Lost Time in the Studio

I have been very remiss in not working in the studio all summer! Not one piece of art work created! At least not in the studio.
I have been working however at something else. Scrap-booking and card making have taken over my life. I have created many hand made greeting cards for family and friends. It has been almost an obsession. Almost, but not quite.
I have gotten into rubber stamping, coloring, die cuts and all of the rest of things necessary to create individual cards, and I am not done yet! Truly a very creative process and artistically stimulating in an entirely different manor.
I will be getting back to my studio soon, so be prepared to hear more.
Enjoy the view. It should be a beautiful week-end.

Well gang,  a lot has happened since the last post, many years ago.

I have moved two times, selling my home of 35 years.  I moved into a 55 and over community and was a resident for about 4 years.  After that I moved into a independent/assisted living community in Pennsylvania near my son and family.  It was a good decision, been here for almost four years now.

Art work comes in several new forms now.  I have been learning to water color by taking classes.  That came to a stop because of the Corona virus.  Our teacher was not allowed access to our campus during the pandemic.

Greeting card making takes up much of my time now.  You tube has made me a better card maker with their tutorials.

Home!

Hello everyone! I am home! Actually, I have been home for 8 days.

I arrived in Philadelphia from San Francisco on April 20th at a few minutes before 6:00AM on the red eye. My cab was waiting for me and I got home before 7:00AM.

The house looked so good to see. I noticed that the azaleas were in bloom but not much else. I went straight to bed for about 7 hours. Boy, that jet lag was tough to beat. It took almost a week to get rid of.

I downloaded the pictures of my trip onto my computer and edited some. Many will be a good source for future oil paintings and pastel pieces.

Today will be lunch with friends. Tomorrow, I will be back in the studio.

Enjoy today, that is all that you can count on, if you are lucky.

Bye for today.

Trip to the Philippeans

April 13, 2010

I am on the island of Siquijor, in the south central Philippines. My daughter, Elaine and I arrived on April 2nd. We have been touring the country, spending time in Boracay first.

The country is beautiful..beaches have crystal clear waters, tropical palm trees and plants.

The people are very friendly and most speak English. The food is very plain. A mickey d's burger will be my first item when I get back to the States!

Many photos were taken, so I hope to have some good ideas for painting when I return.

Enjoy the view all.

Back in the Studio!

Work has been started on a new 8x10 oil. The subject is one large pink rose with pale pink accents on the curve its petals. I plan on including two small, tight buds with greenery.
The basic block in for the large rose has been accomplished, including the negative back round space. The block in has to dry before I proceed to add more shape, color and detail. I expect to be able to continue on this piece by the end of this week.

I plan to work on several small canvas in the meantime, preparing them for additional work.
The blank canvases need a coat of warm grey acrylic to take away the start whiteness of the canvas. (I never work on a stark white canvas with my initial block in of a subject.)

I will be concentrating on several still lift pieces in the near future. One will be a trio of African violets in ceramic pots. Another will be a still life of several colorful vegetables with cooking pots and utensils. Many more ideas are stirring around in my head, but nothing has jelled as yet.

Take care an notice the view...it can be incredible!

January 2010

Another year!

I have been out of the studio for the past six or seven months.

I have been concentrating of designing costume jewelry. Said jewelry has been taking over my life! It has been fun and rewarding. I did a few craft shows, not many due to the economic down turn. Things have been picking up the last few months. I got good feedback from many people and some sales.

I really need to get back to my first love, oil painting. Plans for a new small piece has been running through my mind and I think that I will start drawing tomorrow. Or I should say today in the am. (It's 12 midnight now. Time to hit the hay.

Keep in touch and remember to take time to enjoy life. You only go around once.

Summer time

Where has the time gone! Summer has been in full swing, and where have I been?

Traveling, that's where! I spend a week in June at my son and daughter in law house, getting my grandson Matthew to and from wrestling practice and picking up my granddaughter at day camp. What fun!

Then on to San Francisco to visit with my daughter Elaine. We had a wonderful time, dinning, seeing "Wicked" and then driving down the Big Sur coast to Santa Barbara. Saw magnificent scenery and interesting things.

I also flew to Seattle and spent a few days with my long time friend Stephanie and her husband Joe. All is well with Joe now, thank God.

Since this is a artist blog, I quess that I should mention that I am back at the drawing board and easel, working on three projects at the same time. I will talk about the projects on my next post.

Gone for Awhile

I have been gone from this blog spot for quite awhile.

I have not been producing any art for far too long. I got involved with designing costume jewelry! It has been interesting and emotionally satisfying. Not very financially successful though, due to the economic downswing the nation has been facing. People have not been spending, and I do not blame them. I haven't been spending much either.

I plan to go back to creating art, starting new week. There may be no buyers for quite awhile, but that is OK. I need to keep by skills up to date, and the only way to do that is by practice.
I think that I will be taking some classes several days a week also.

Enjoy the view, it will get better sooner or later.
