I primarily work in oil, because I enjoy the rich texture and buttery feel of the oil as I paint. You can manipulate oil to create color excitement, drama, mood and texture in a painting. There is a pleasure in creating a work of art from first draft to finished project that excites me and fills my fundamental need to create.

Lost Time in the Studio

I have been very remiss in not working in the studio all summer! Not one piece of art work created! At least not in the studio.

I have been working however at something else. Scrap-booking and card making have taken over my life. I have created many hand made greeting cards for family and friends. It has been almost an obsession. Almost, but not quite.

I have gotten into rubber stamping, coloring, die cuts and all of the rest of things necessary to create individual cards, and I am not done yet! Truly a very creative process and artistically stimulating in an entirely different manor.

I will be getting back to my studio soon, so be prepared to hear more.

Enjoy the view. I am home! Actually, I have been home for 8 days.

I arrived in Philadelphia from San Francisco on April 20th at a few minutes before 6:00AM on the red eye. My cab was waiting for me and I got home before 7:00AM.

The house looked so good to see. I noticed that the azaleas were in bloom but not much else. I went straight to bed for about 7 hours. Boy, that jet lag was tough to beat. It took almost a week to get rid of.

I downloaded the pictures of my trip onto my computer and edited some. Many will be a good source for future oil paintings and pastel pieces.

Today will be lunch with friends. Tomorrow, I will be back in the studio.

Enjoy today, that is all that you can count on, if you are lucky.

Bye for today.

Carolyn

Trip to the Philippeans

April 13, 2010

I am on the island of Siquijor, in the south central Philippines. My daughter, Elaine and I arrived on April 2nd. We have been touring the country, spending time in Boracay first.

The country is beautiful..beaches have crystal clear waters, tropical palm trees and plants.

The people are very friendly and most speak English. The food is very plain. I plan on including two small, tight buds with greenery.
The basic block in for the large rose has been accomplished, including the negative back round space. The block in has to dry before I proceed to add more shape, color and detail. Summer has been in full swing, and where have I been?

Traveling, that's where! I spend a week in June at my son and daughter in law house, getting my grandson Matthew to and from wrestling practice and picking up my granddaughter at day camp. What fun!

Then on to San Francisco to visit with my daughter Elaine. We had a wonderful time, dinning, seeing "Wicked" and then driving down the Big Sur coast to Santa Barbara. Saw magnificent scenery and interesting things.

I also flew to Seattle and spent a few days with my long time friend Stephanie and her husband Joe. All is well with Joe now, thank God.

Since this is a artist blog, I quess that I should mention that I am back at the drawing board and easel, working on three projects at the same time. It took me a long time to get home from Ambler, Pa. because of the heavy rains. (I had stayed over night at my son's house on Sunday.)
I got home late and didn't have the creative urge.

I will probably work on the oil painting this morning and the pastel piece this afternoon.

Please wish me a good creative experience!

See you later.

Carolyn

Happy Mothers Day

Happy Mother's Day to one and all of you wonderful ladies!

I am planning to spend the day with my son, daughter-in-law and both grandchildren at my son's in-laws house. This piece is on a 16" x 20" cotton duck canvas, gallery profile.

I blocked in the outline shapes of the vegetables yesterday. Today I started blocking in general color to the veggies, nothing specific as yet, just tone and shape. I will deal with the negative space later in the day, using burnt umber. I will warm the burnt umber with tones of red and cool some areas in deep shade with ultramarine blue.

All of the above is necessary to adjust tones and deal with negative space.

If you are wondering why I am not working of the pastel piece, I needed to order several new colors of pastel sticks and I am waiting for them to arrive before I continue. They should arrive by early next week.

Well, enough for now, I need to get back to work.

See you soon. Enjoy the day. Everything has gone well and I am back in the studio.

Preliminary work for a new pastel still life has been blocked out and drawn on Caisson pale blue paper. It is a large piece, 18" x 24" depicting various summer and autumn vegetables. A pumpkin, green and red peppers, a luxurious green leafy cabbage, a gourd and a parsnip. The green leafy cabbage takes center stage.

I like the layout of this piece so very much that I think that I will repeat it on canvas and oil paint. I will work on both pieces, one one day and the other the next day.

There are many additional ideas that are swimming around in my head for other projects this summer. What a trip! The best one in San Francisco for a long time.

Why, you might ask? Several reasons, I guess. My trip was the longest one, to this city. Eighteen days to be exact. It gave me more time to enjoy and get around the city by car and bus than before. I really learned how the city was laid out, and the location of one area to another. Driving myself helped a great deal, after I got over my fear of the many hills and drops. (It actually got to be fun! Like here we go again!)

Another reason was that I got to spend quality time with my daughter, Elaine. We were able to go out and see sights together, go to the opening game of the San Francisco Giants, go to a concert, museums, and dine out several times. Since we live on opposite coasts, we don't see each other on a regular monthly basis.

I recommend a visit to the De Young museum in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. I enjoyed their regular collection and the Mayan pottery exhibit very much.

Elaine and I went to the Russian River area, above Santa Rosa, Ca. this past week end, The area is unspoiled, sparsely populated, and beautiful. We took many pictures of the area. Hopefully a few will turn up in my paintings.

We stopped at two vineyards, Korbel and Iron Horse. Lunch at Korbel was very good. Champagne and wine was excellent at Iron Horse.

I am looking forward with enthusiasm for my return home to New Jersey. I have several oil paintings in mind. I also have plans to begin a new pastel still life piece.

Will catch you all up on the progress of my new pieces of art as they are born.

Remember to enjoy the view of life. It can be very beautiful.

Carolyn

Back in San Francisco

Hello all, April 7, 2008

I'm out in San Francisco again, visiting my daughter Elaine. Saw fisherman's wharf, china town and Saulsalito by car and foot.

Learned to navigate around the city and drive those hills that strike terror into the hearts of people who never have to drive that way. After the first few ones, they became a piece of cake!

Elaine and I drove to Sonoma on Saturday past. We shopped until be dropped or ran out of money. We got some beautiful items that we will treasure. Thank God for shipping or I would have to buy another large suitcase!

We plan to go north this week end to the area where the Russian River is located. The area is just beautiful and I plan to take lots of pictures. Hopefully, the pictures that I take will inspire me to create additional painting.

Speaking of paintings, my studio is finished and ready for me to get back in business of creating art. All I need to do, is return home, which is around the corner in time.

Bye for now. Remember to enjoy the view, life can be so short.

Carolyn

October 16, 2006

The studio work goes on. So much has been done with so much to do.

A new still life oil painting was started early in the week. It's a kitchen piece with vegetables that are fresh and some already in jars. There is lots of shades of green and reds (my favorite colors) with a copper bowl for contrast. I'm liking it and I hope that you will also.

Thursday was my regular meeting with my mentor Lori Levin. We decided to sharpen my pastel skills for several sessions. Lori set up a still life of autumn objects, pumpkin, gords in several colors with autumn leaves on a light pastel green napkin.

I did several preliminary drawings to get the composition "right." Then my final drawing was done on pastel paper. The lightest shades and tones of color went in first. I am still establishing those shades and tones. Darks will go in last. But it was not what you would think.

My grandson Matthew needed adult supervision. He finished summer camp but has not started first grade yet. I spent the week at my son and daughter-in-laws house helping out.

It was a very good week, spent with family. Matt was enrolled in a morning soccer camp run by UK Elite. Matt had two terrific coaches, Phil from England and Katrina from Ireland. They worked very hard to give the 6 year olds the basic skills. Matt worked very hard and was incredibly focused for a 6 year old. He hit the big 37 today. We will celebrate tomorrow when we are all together. It has been a quick 37 years, seems like it was just yesterday.

This past week went very well. I finished my still life that I was painting with my mentor's critique on Thursday like we planned. I am very pleased with it. The oil painting is a 16" x 20" still life. It's name is "Sugar Rush". "Sugar Rush" went on sale this evening on ebay, listed under self representing artists, Carolyn Needleman.

Five other oil paintings went up in addition to "Sugar Rush". You will be able to view all if you go to EBay's web site.

I have been spending an hour a day working on graphite drawing studies, in addition to oil painting. I am pleased with my results so far. My drawing skills needed work, as I was getting "rusty."

Life is good, remember to count your blessing and see the beauty around you.

Carolyn

Mid Week

August 16, 2006

This week has been a very productive week. I finished four oil paintings, including "Jill's Garden 2" The other three paintings need names. Have to ponder about that.

I am doing some graphite sketches to help my hand and brain coordination. They are going well, which should please my mentor, Lori. She urges me to do a little each day to keep my skills moving along in the right direction.

Speaking about Lori, I will be seeing her tomorrow. I expect to finish the painting that I have been working on (with her critique). I have been thinking about a name for it, yes names again. I think "Sugar Rush" will be right. You will understand when you see the painting!

Six of my paintings are going to go on sale this week end on Ebay. I will post them on Saturday eve, around 8:00PM. You can view them under artistnj or self representing artist, Carolyn Needleman.

Bye for now. Remember to see the beauty around you. My painting has gone well and I finished three pieces that were "hanging around" uncompleted. All small floral pieces. They are now drying and need varnishing. They also need names! Woe is me, names! I need inspiration.

I also went back to another incomplete work, "Jill's Garden, 2" I re did the entire background. The piece now has the look that I am trying to portray. All of the flesh tones now have to be re done plus her hair. Jill will be finished, God willing by this week end.

This afternoon was spent in Pennsville, NJ working with my mentor, Lori Levin, in her studio.
I had started a still life that she set up for me before I went away on vacation. It is a 16" x 20" original work with some of my favorite items. (Books, choc chip cookies and Coke Cola!)
It's not as basic as it sounds as there are other items in the still life, but you get some idea of what I am talking about. The work went very, very well today and I should complete it next Thursday.

Thanks go to Lori for all of her good advice, comments, and critiquing. She has helped me to look at my work from a different perspective and has helped me to discipline my bad habits.
(Some of the bad habits are still there, but I am working on corrections.!)

Enjoy each and every day. I haven't even gone to bed yet.

Yesterday, Tuesday was a good art day. I worked on a piece that has given me trouble for awhile. I think I have worked out the problems. It is a still life of various pots, pans, bottles and fruit and vegetables. It's a melage of kitchen items and cooking items. (Cooking is one of my favorite things.) I need to let several passages dry before I continue with it.

Tomorrow, which is now today, will see me work on another composition, in the mean time.
Children at the beach will be the theme. Paying bills, working on the budget for this month and calling in repair men for various household problems.

When all is said and done, the day is now finished.

The good thing is, I did all of that today, and tomorrow looks to be free for art. I was able to spend time with friends and family, enjoy their company and indulge my passion for art and beautiful scenery. Who could ask for anything more.

The art galleries held many interesting pieces of work. I especially enjoyed Leroy Nieman's.
I viewed six paintings of his at a gallery in San Francisco. I loved each and every one. His technique is vibrant and very much alive. What a master!

The beginning of this week was devoted to all of the mundane things one has to do when one returns from vacation but......the end of the week was devoted to painting.

I finished a composition that I had begin before I left for the West Coast. It is three roses in a glass vase. I will let it dry, then photograph it, varnish it and put it up for sale.

Many new ideas are forming in my head for new works. I will most likely start a new piece using my photos of my trip out west. The weather was hot but not humid so walking around the towns and art galleries was plesant. So much inspiration!

Ocean views were spectacular of the Pacific. The ocean was calm and the air was clear for good viewing. We were able to see dolphins and harbour seals.

The Monterey Aquarium was outstanding in it's presentation of the life of the area of Monterey in the Pacific Ocean. It is a great child friendly atmosphere with outstanding exibits for both adult and child. You learn as you enjoy!

Today, Monday, July 25th was inspirational. I was able to view several outstanding Leroy Neiman litheographs in San Francisco. I love his interpretation of his subject matter and his bold use of color. Wow, half of the year has gone by already. It's been a good year so far, family and friends are well and all are busy.

My art career is both satisfying and beginning to take off in a good direction. Several works are in progress and two works are finished and waiting for buyers.

I spent time on Thursday, yesterday, with my mentor, Lori Levin. She keeps me grounded in good fundamentals of drawing and planning first, painting next. Last week I did the necessary prep work of fundamentals.

This week I started applying oil to canvas of the new still life. It was going well, until I realized that something was bothering me about the right upper quad of the canvas. I pointed out my concerns to Lori and she agreed with me. The cookie jar looked to be in a precarious position. In reality, it would never be balanced that way. It would have tumbled over.

Back to the re-drawing and reshaping of the book under the cookie jar, enlarging the book so that the jar balanced properly. It's funny, both of us didn't notice the error until color started to be applied. That only goes to show you that you have to constantly evaluate what you are doing while painting for many things. Everything makes sense now regarding that area of the painting.

I finished a 8" 2 10" still life study of a red rose, stem and leaves yesterday at home. I will put in up for sale in August with a still life study in pastel of various kitchen items.

Back to work now on a new series of still lives.

Carolyn

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Wow! The month of June is almost finished for this year. Time is certainly flying by, when you're having fun.

Let's see....It's been about a week since I did an update on my blog. What has happened?

The session with my art mentor, Lori Levin, went very well last Thursday. I started on a new still life, 16" x 20" in size. Lori did my set up of object and lighting for me. (She knows me well by now and incorporated some of my favorite items.) Not telling what they are as yet...But they made me smile.

She made me do my homework by doing my pencil preliminary drawings first for placement of objects. Actually, she made me do three. When we were both satisfied, I drew my favorite of the three drawings onto the 16" x 20" canvas with vine charcoal. I then checked my work for accuracy. After that I outlined objects with a very thin wash of Ultramarine blue to hold the placement. I will then begin to actually paint the still life this Thursday.

I have been working on other projects this week at home. I am still working on a still life of pots, pans, glassware and apples on a yellow tablecloth. It is also 16" x 20" in size and is going well.

Today I worked on a smaller piece, 8" x 10" of a red American Beauty rose. It is almost complete. I need to paint the rose's leaves and then I will be finished with this art work. I am very pleased with the way it is going...It almost painted itself.

I will try again to add pictures but I'm not optimistic that I will be able to show you what I am talking and working on. I need my computer expert to help me, and my son (who is the expert) is very busy with his children this week.

Bye, Think and enjoy art! Beauty is in many places.

Carolyn

Wednesday, June 21, 2006

Work continued on my newest still life oil painting today. I worked on the copper pot and the black pot today, getting the shadows and highlights on, including painting the handles onto the pots. Next, I need to work on the glass jar that is in the painting. That will have to wait until tomorrow or Friday. After those items are finished, I will begin to work on the mid ground and then the foreground.

I am going to see my mentor, Lori Levin, tomorrow. I will be working on another still life project that she has assembled for my challenge. Can't wait to see it! Will tell you all about it after I see it. My grandson had a few days off from the end of school to Monday when he was to start summer camp and needed adult supervision.

I was lucky to spend one on one time first with my grandson on Thursday. It was interesting to re connect with my inner child and think of things from a child's perspective of six years. Also fun to draw with a six year old. Such imagination and freedom from fear of not getting it right!

The next day it was one on one time with my granddaughter of 3 years. She is my "Hot Tamale, Firecracker!" What a whirlwind of activity! Chuck N Cheese kept her occupied and very happy for 2.5 hours. Needless to say, I was very tired afterwards, but not she, no nap for her. I don't know how she did it...I must be getting very old.

Needless to say, days like those above are priceless.

Monday it's back to art projects. (I have sold all of my oils on canvas.)

Monday, I went looking into my stack of drawings for inspiration and I came across an unfinished pastel drawing that I did while I was taking an art class at Rowan College, in Glassboro, NJ several years ago.

I decided that I would make a new piece, smaller than the original, but incorportating all of the design features.

Work was begun on Canson grey pastel paper, size 9 x 12" I first sketched the placement of various objects with graphite pencil. When satisfied, I begain using pastel in a various crosshatching technique, layering darker colors over lighter colors. I played with various techniques and truely enhoyed the entire process from beginning to end.

On Tuesday, I begain the entire process over again, in oils on canvas. The canvas piece wll have most of the same objects in it, with additional objects to give the finished work more punch and interest, since it is a much larger canvas than the pastel piece.

So far, so good.

Carolyn

June 12, 2006

This week end was a profitable one for selling my art. Three oil paintings on canvas sold to people in various parts of the United States. Thank you.

Today, Monday, was an interesting day. I decided to take a look at some of my prior drawings, to find some inspiration for new work. I came across an unfinished large pastel piece that I had worked on in one of my numerous art courses.

This piece was started at my class at Rowen College, Glassboro, NJ several years ago. I decided to make a smaller sketch to check the placement of objects before I continued with a new piece of work. Once satisfied with the rough drawing, I sketched the placement of objects lightly with graphite on Canson Mi-Teintes grey paper for pastel. The size is 9" x 12".

I decided from the start that I would just play with color, various strokes with the pastel sticks and just have a good time creating. I finished the work this afternoon and had such a good time creating this art piece. I now have to think of a name for the work. Sometimes that is the hardest thing to do and sometimes it just comes. No yet today....maybe tomorrow. I have to live with it for a day or so until the right name comes.

I will try to upload it to my blog tonight for you to see if possible. I am back. I bet that you though that I gave up on art. No, that's not true.
I have been so very busy making art, that I didn't have time to post on my blog.

I have been working on two to three projects. You may ask why two or three? Well, we artists have to work between projects because we have to let some passages and areas dry before we can continue on with paint applications to each canvas.

Current work progresses on a seashore painting of a sailing ship with passengers off of Atlantic City, NJ. I took the photo several years ago and found it in my collection of photos.

Another photo from the shore also interested me. It is a photo of a Cape May, NJ bed and breakfast. It has a homey, welcoming look that I want to portray on canvas.

I am going to try to add work in progress of these two subjects to this posting. Wish me luck.

June 2, 2006

Several oil painting have gone up for sale on ebay. Well, I took a break from art for the past week to catch up one some projects for the home. It's a never ending commitment when you are a home owner to keeping the house in good shape. It was good to see and hear from children and to spend time with them and the grandchildren.

Now, back to art projects. I am in a beach mood today. Since it is raining out today, I need to go to the beach in my mind, instead of taking a day trip to the Jersey shore.

I looked through my photos and found two that I like and think will make interesting art.

One is a sailing ship off the coast of the Jersey shore. The other is of a group of people sitting on the sand at the Jersey shore.

The second picture is more complex. I think that I will go with the sailing ship today and begin that project and save the second picture for later. The best omelets are with eggs, peppers and onions in my opinion. Leave out the cheese on this one.

This painting of peppers and onions is not finished by a long shot. I am forced to stop as usual for certain passages to dry before I can add all of the "goodies." Are you wondering what the "goodies" are? There is a lot of yard work to be done and a lot of planting of spring and summer flowers to be done. I think that it will take another one to two weeks to get all of that done. Then I can relax and just water all of my lush, lovely garden and have a lot of subjects to paint and admire.

I did have time to finish "Two Egg Omelet" on Thursday. It is above us on this post. I believe that I will do a companion piece with red and green bell peppers. Maybe add a jalapeno or two to spice things up. Time to clear the "decks" so to speak and start new art projects.

Two of my latest paintings are going up for sale tonight on ebay. Please look for my work under "self representing artists", Carolyn Needleman or "artistnj"

The first piece of work, entitled "Not a Shy Violet" was a labor of love. My white and violet African violet was a powerhouse of blooms and endured the three weeks at my still life setup like a trooper. The work is Victorian and romantic in mood with the sensuality of red velvet.

The second piece of work is called "Jill's Garden." It is a dramatic change from the original photo of Jill. The background has been totally changed in the oil painting. Jill has changed also. Her hair has been styled differently and her dress and jumper are different colors than the original photo. What can I say? Artistic license!

I hope that April was a good month for you and may May bring you much blessings!

April 28, 2006

This week has been one of intense accomplishment. I finished one version of "Jill's Garden." The completed work is posted on the April 26, 2006 posting. I am happy with that version. I will now go back to my first version and complete it also, to have two very different versions of "Jill's Garden" to sell.

Today I finished my still life of African violets in a white and blue bowl with a silver spoon on red velvet. It has a romantic, Victorian mood to the painting. I have been thinking of a name for this piece and it has eluded me up until now. I think that I will name it "Not a Shy Violet." I need to let the spoon dry and then varnish the piece. It will be offered for sale at the web site called "artbyus.com" At least I think that is the name of their web site. Will let you all know for sure before I place it up for sale. Pictures to come after I varnish the piece.

I also worked on "Two Egg Omelet" today. It's an interesting piece to do. There is a lot of grey color and tone in the egg carton. It's quite a study in warm and cool colors. I am using a very limited palette of Alizarin Crimson which is a bluish red, yellow ocher which is a dull yellow by itself, but turns a beautiful yellow when mixed with white, and French Ultramarine Blue which is a deep blue. The piece requires a lot of observation skills and slight variations of hues and tones. I will photograph it tomorrow when the sun comes out for you to see it's progress.

I want to take this opportunity to thank my mentor, Lori Levin of Soulfulstudios.com for all of her advice and critique of my work. Her advice is always welcome.

April 26, 2006

April has been a very busy month for art.

I am working on several pieces at once, while waiting for some areas of others to dry.

I took a good hard look at "Jill Garden." I was not happy with the way the work was progressing. I decided to stop work on that piece and re draw the basic idea on another canvas, leaving out much of the background and concentrating on the foreground only. I was able to finish it today and I think that the change makes for a more focused work of art. The background green color was "tacky" but dry enough to add shapes in the background. I was also able to work on Jill's face and arms and part of her dress. Her dress is now red. The pinks in her face and her dress were so close in tonal value that both were getting lost. I needed to change one or the other and the dress was the winner.

I was planning to offer a botanical study of yellow lilies for auction to ebay. Upon reflection and careful study, I decided not to auction this piece. I do not think that this piece is up to my standards. The composition is weak and it breaks the "rules" of placement of subject matter. (One is allowed to break the rules of course. But in order to do this you must have a strong subject and portray it convincingly.) This one didn't do it. Back to the drawing board. That's what happens when you rush and try to cut corners and not do your prelimary planning.

April 21, 2006

Art is going slowly these last few days. I needed to rework the spoon in my painting of violets. It slowly got "chunky" and lost it's soft curves in the handle. It has been reshaped. I may be able to work on it in the next two to three days. I can not wait to get back to it.

I have started another still life oil painting in the meantime to keep busy. It's two eggs in a egg carton entitled, "Two Egg Omelet." Something for a still life lover's kitchen. Yes, we do put oil paintings in the kitchen. At least this still life lover does. I will put it up for sale either on ebay or another site that is dedicated to fine art. I will let the public know what I decide regarding sales site. Here is my latest picture of it before I finish.

April 17, 2006

Visiting family this Easter week end was enjoyable. I try to paint every day during the week and take the week end off to see family and friends. But, my mind is on what to accomplish while the violets dry.

I spent some time looking at my considerable stacks of photos to determine what my next piece of work would be. I found two that I would consider attempting. The first is a picture of my niece Jill when she was a small child of about 3-4 years old. I always liked this photo and I thing I will give it a try. The second is a beach scene on the Island of Rhodes, Greece that I took in about 1996. Both are possibilities for new work.

April 7, 06

Art takes a back seat today because it is grandparents day at my grandson's school.

I traveled from Turnersville, NJ to Pennsylviania to stay overnight at my son and daughter-in-laws house to be on time to attend my grandson's school program honoring grandparents.

We had a one hour program. The children shared their daily written journal with pictures with their grandparent. Each was unique, from the child's point of view. The grandparent brought in a picture of their childhood and explained it to their grandchild. We had snacks and the children had a group sing and spell of colors. Everyone had a good time and I cherish this day. The velvet is now red....amazing how you may first decide on one color, then as the painting progresses, you realize that another color will enhance the painting and will be a better choice for the overall color scheme.

Thank God that the violet blooms are so long lasting. I need to wait for certain areas of the painting to dry before I continue with the rendering of the blooms. Hopefully, I will finish the painting next week. Work on the new still life is progressing nicely.

I worked on the folds of the table cloth today. The folds seemed to paint themselves. I have finally been able to get the right mixture of green to render the leaves correctly. I am pleased with the end result.

The painting is coming along as I visualize it. It looks so feminine and delicate, but it is a little powerhouse of blooms.

I think that I want to capture the delicate feminine side of the flowers with the drama of black velvet.

I need a third object to pull your eye in to examine the entire painting. I found a baby spoon that is the perfect size to do the job. That was added to the composition.

Now, what does it all look like? Is it pleasing to the eye? Does it say what I want it to say?
Yes, it does.

Now on to preliminary drawings of the subject to see on paper if it is interesting. After various drawings, I see what is the most interesting of all.

Next on to drawing it on my canvas. Is this what I want to say in this painting? Yes.

3-20-2006

Well, it's finished!
